Mindfulness Matters Australia are proud to present a 2-day Teacher Training Course on the Mindfulness Program for Children 3 (6-8 year olds) for primary teachers. This program is for Year 1 and Year 2 teachers and has direct links to the NSW School Curriculum.

The Mindfulness Program for Children 3 (MPC3) has been written by an MBCT specialist mindfulness trainer and two primary teachers with more than 25 years of teaching 4-8 year olds between them. The pilot phase has been undertaken at Broulee Public School in NSW. MPC3 teaches 6-8 year olds the principles of MBCT in an approach that is suitable for their age group. The MPC3 is linked directly to the NSW School curriculum for 6-8 year olds in such a way that it can be easily integrated into the school curriculum at this level.

The course fee includes the Teacher’s workbook which summarises lesson plans, timing of activities, resources and links to the focused and linked outcomes of the NSW School Curriculum.

Each teacher will be given a 8-week personal development program that will link their own daily mindfulness practice to the 8 mindfulness lessons that they teach to the students.

Course A: During the day, you will be able to experience most of the 8 lessons, in real time. There will be a chance to discuss the classroom management issues and to practice guiding the mindfulness sessions in pairs. The links with the NSW School Curriculum will be discussed and made clear. After this training, you will be able to spend time developing your own daily mindfulness practice, for at least 4-6 months, alongside developing the mindfulness practices with the children, within your classroom.

To complete the mindfulness training course, it will be essential to complete a reflective diary of your personal practice, how the program is developing in your classroom during the months between Part A and Part B. You will also be asked to bring a video recording of lesson 2 and lesson 6. This will form the basis of discussion in Part B.

Course B: consolidates the delivery of the program with consideration of the practicalities of classroom management skills, the inquiry approach, delivering guided mindfulness practices to groups of students and how to organise peer supervision of mindfulness teachers in the school.

It is essential to attend both 2 sessions for the whole of the training period.

The 2-day training program allows you the opportunity to obtain mindfulness qualifications, to develop your own personal mindfulness practice and to learn teach mindfulness to children in an educational setting. It does not provide the training for you to teach other teachers to develop their own mindfulness practice or for you to teach others to teach the Mindfulness Program for Children 3 (6-8 year olds).

Jean Watson is an experienced, internationally trained and accredited mindfulness teacher and consultant; a practising school teacher who has completed a Masters degree at Oxford University in MBCT.
