Introduction to Mindfulness

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for beginners to learn how to develop their own mindfulness practice – there are no pre-requisites. It can also be used as a refresher course to further understand and experience mindfulness teaching in groups. It is not a therapeutic program.

Why do this course?

The evidence-based course is designed to provide infant, primary and secondary teachers with some basic techniques to develop their own mindfulness practice and to begin to recognise how these techniques may be used in an educational setting to enhance their own performance. Participants will have an opportunity to engage with and explore each mindfulness technique so that they have the potential to take these personal skills back to their everyday mindfulness practice at home and in the classroom.

This course is a good starting point for developing the skills and techniques for the development of a personal mindfulness practice which is a pre-requisite of teaching mindfulness to others, as recommended by the Good Practice Guidelines for Teaching Mindfulness-Based Courses.

Details of the course.

The course is based on scientific evidence from psychology, education and neuroscience along with the fundamental principles of mindfulness- based cognitive therapy (MBCT); including research with school students and teachers, with adaptations for teachers to use for themselves in the classroom.

The course will cover:

  • The research evidence behind the mindfulness program for teachers and students
  • The facilities /conditions needed to develop a daily personal mindfulness practice
  • Basic mindfulness techniques – learning the stages of the techniques and trying out the techniques.
  • A personal developmental program for the 4 weeks following the introduction course will be suggested, to practice and learn the techniques with activities each day.
  • A workbook is provided which gives a summary of the mindfulness practices, with access to guided audio mindfulness practices, which are provided alongside the textbook:  ‘Mindfulness: a practical guide for finding peace in a frantic world’ by Mark Williams and Danny Penman (2011) Piatkus. The cost of the book ($25.00) is included in the course fees.

It is useful to bring a mat and a cushion, for the activities we will do on the floor.

Expected Outcomes

This course provides the opportunity for the development of a personal mindfulness practice alongside an understanding of how mindfulness skills may be used in an educational setting.

The introduction course is designed to be the first course for teachers in a series and provides a starting point for the pre-requisites needed train to teach a mindfulness syllabus to others, in educational settings.
